Thank you all so much for the part you played in the events of our Harvest for the World Weekend. We raised over £2,000 from the Concert and the Soup Lunch which will be shared between the East Africa Appeal, the Manna Centre for the homeless in London Bridge and St Mary’s. This would not have been possible without the love and support of so many of you who cooked and baked and shopped, who sang, who spoke, who made music, who arranged flowers, who provided technical support, who designed and printed publicity, who cleaned, who moved furniture, who washed up, who served food, who ushered, who bought tickets, who made donations, who played their part in making the weekend a time of fun and fellowship and helping to raise this amazing amount of money for people at home and overseas who are starving and homeless. Not forgetting the Bring a Thing collection for the Manna Centre, to which you all responded so generously with your gifts. And finally a very special thank you to Vicky Hicks for making the concert happen; we could not have done it without you. The Events and Mission Committees.
150th Anniversary of Hymns Ancient & Modern
The church was packed for evensong on 18th September when a special service was held to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Hymns Ancient and Modern. We were delighted to welcome Professor Jeremy Dibble who gave a fascinating talk entitled 'Come let us join our cheerful songs' - Hymns Ancient & Modern and how it shaped Anglican worship. Jeremy is Professor of Music at Durham University but grew up in Theydon Bois and was a choirboy at St. Mary’s. He is Musical Editor of the forthcoming Canterbury Dictionary of Hymnology and his passion for Victorian and Edwardian British music is evident from his publications.
Professor Jeremy Dibble (centre front), Rev. Stephen Walker, Vicar of St. Mary’s, and Edward Kemp-Luck, organist, with members of St. Mary’s Church Choir.
